Moon pictures through a telescope

April 30th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Photography

Last night it was really clear and really nice, and almost a full moon, so we broke out the new telescope for the the first time and used it to look at the moon. I took some pictures just by holding the camera to the telescope eyepiece which came out surprisingly well. Next time I’ll use a tripod, but the secret seemed to be to set a high iso (which accounts for the noise in the pictures) and step down the exposure by -2 since the moon was so bright. I really didn’t need to photoshop these too much at all either so I was pretty happy as a first attempt.

It was alot of fun, so I am guessing these will be the first of many this summer. Here’s the pictures:

The blog is the new resume…

April 28th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Blogging, Online Identity, Web

Read an article on Traces Of Inspiration, that talked about how the blog is serving as a potential hiring tool. This is kind of an extension of the Online Persona that i have been talking about, but instead of doing it in multiple places like I am, the author seems to think that the blog should contain it all.

The other thing readers of both my blogs will notice is that I am pretty light on specifics of what i actually do. Maybe my postition is somewhat unique to many people working in technology, but disclosing too much of what I am working on is not a great idea.

That is not to say that I am disagreeing with the post’s author. I think we both are saying the same thing, the implementation is just a bit different. I guess that the big take away from all this though, is that regardless of how you decide to do it, a technology worker needs to have some sort of online presence.

The flip side of this is that you need to maintain some sort of control over over how you present yourself online. While I don’t feel the need to completely segregate my personal life and professional life in this blog, I could see where it might come back to bite you. So while there is nothing really too embarrassing or employment blocking on something like my Myspace page, it is not something that i am going to actively promote (say in the blogroll) or would want a potential employer to see as a first impression. So I sort of try and promote which face I want to put forward and to actively manage it.

My week in photos

So one of my goals was the nebulous “Take more pictures“. That is all well and good, but I think I need something more tangible, so i am going to start posting my week in photos. The are just going to be photos that I have taken that week. They are going to have absolutely no documentation purpose, other then to hopefully document my growth as a photographer. So without further ado here is the current week in photos:

What I’ve learned by quitting smoking (so far)

April 27th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Goals, Sean Lavelle, Tip

So it has been 11 weeks since I quit smoking. Not too shabby. While it has not been all champagne and roses, I feel that it has gone pretty well. I also learned several things that i feel can be applied to more then just quitting smoking. Several things I learned:

  • Smoking is expensive. I always knew it, but never had any sort of tangible evidence. But in 11 weeks, it breaks out like this: I smoked a pack a day. I bought cartoons for about $38.00. A carton lasted on average 10 days. So over the 11 weeks (77 days), I saved (( 7 * $38) + (.7 * $38) = $292.20! And that is just over 11 weeks. That’s around $1300 a year.
  • Messing up on is not a reason to give up. The last couple times I tried to quit and failed, I would go cold turkey and when I slipped up, I would just go back to smoking. This time when I messed up, I just got on with it. I would have a cigarette, and not let it ruin what I had accomplished. This, I think is something important to take away since it can apply to alot in life. Instead of getting discouraged by missteps, just keep at it since nothing ever goes perfectly the first time though.
  • Boredom is the enemy. Aside from getting angry (which is surprisingly easy when you are going through nicotine withdrawal), being bored made me want to smoke. Idle hands and what not …
  • Don’t try to change everything at once. Maybe this works for some people, but changing too many things at once for me just gets a bit overwhelming and makes the whole thing come crashing down.

28 Goals in 365 Days

April 20th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Goals, Sean Lavelle

I read an interesting piece about goal setting yesterday on Get Rich Slowly about completing 101 goals in 1001 days. I didn’t really like the 2 1/2 year time frame with some of the changes I have going on in the somewhat near future. But I did like the idea of setting the goals, so I thought I’d give it a shot in a smaller scale.

Since this is something I’d like to keep tabs on, I’m going to create a new page for it so I can update it as I go. I’ll update the page as well as post about how I meet them as well.

So here is the link to the goals page.  They are in no particular order and are pretty much all over the place, from classic books I’ve meant to read, to paying down my student loans.

Tech Tools - My Kit

April 14th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Tech, Web

Web Worker Daily has an interesting post on what they consider a tool kit for an IT worker. I posted mine, but I thought I would share a little more more in depth.

CDs:

I keep both these distro’s with me, since for most tasks, Ubuntu will take care of the job just fine, and it is the distro that I am most comfortable with. BackTrack, has alot of tools built in that can sometimes solve alot of problems (Scanners, forensic tools, etc…)

My USB Keys:

I mostly use the ZyXEL, but certain tools like Kismet won’t work with it’s chipset, so I keep the Belkin handy. The 512Mb Drive has all my data and passwords on it. The 4 Gb is for file transfers and contains Windows utilities (ClamWin AV, 7zip, etc…)

Miscellaneous

  • My Leatherman Wave
  • My datebook/notebook/addressbook (I’ve had 2 pdas. I just never use them)

What’s rocking me this month…

I thought I would share what I’ve been listening to this month for anyone who cares.   I always make a attempt to expose myself  to new music regularly and hopefully I can share some of the good stuff I’ve found.  So here is what I was listening to in March:

Albums

  • The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - Wow.  They just keep getting better.  IMHO the best Arcade Fire album yet.  It is different then Funeral, but I think even stronger.  Some of the songs have a definite Bruce Springsteen vibe.  Essential tracks : “Black Waves/ Bad Vibrations”, “No Cars Go”
  • Artic Monkeys - Whatever People Say That I Am, That’s What I’m Not - This is an older album that I just never got around to .  It was really hyped, and I think that turned me off.  But it is a really slick album, and definitely is worth a listen.  Essential tracks : “From the Ritz to the Rubble”, “Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong, But…”
  • Tokyo Police Club - A Lesson In Crime[EP] - A really upbeat, weird little album.  Handclaps, gang vocals, futuristic lyrics… it all works.  Definitely give it a listen.  Essential tracks : “Nature of the Experiment”, “Be Good”
  • He Is Legend - Suck Out the Poison - Not an album for everyone, but it is the best work they have put out so far (and I loved I Am Hollywood).  This album is roaring wall of sound with vocals that go from melodic to a tortured roar in some blistering good non-traditional metal / post-hardcore.  Essential tracks : “China White II”, “The Widow of Magnolia”

Updated the site a bit…

April 6th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Blogging

Still crazy here at work, but cleaned up the site a bit.   I’ve  used both Wordpress and Blogger as blogging stes, and like wordpress better, but it is kinda limited in the themes and how customizable it is.

Regardless, this looks a bit cleaner then the previous theme.

A couple nice days, then madness…

weather.jpg

It was 80 degrees F, 2 days ago. It’s snowing now. Luckily I took advantage of the nice weather and did all sorts of outdoorsy stuff. And I cleaned the house. Then it started snowing and I had to come back to work…. and it was crazy at work. Just one of those crazy busy days. So I guess that is the long winded version of why I have not updated anything in a while… :)
As an aside, when I started the whole Creating an On-line Persona project last week, my only hit in Google was 3 pages back, an old email I sent to the Apache project cause they had .so’s instead of windows .dll’s in 2001. So not only was my whole google presence incredibly obscure, it also made me look like a big dofuss (the good people at the Apache project renamed the dll’s to so’s in the windows distribution of Apache so everything was the same across platforms )

But, with minimal effort, this is where I stand today on a search for my name:

Well, we will see just were we can go. not a bad start though…

April 1st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Blogging, Digital Pincushion, Sean Lavelle

Maybe it’s bad form to mention it, but my technology blog, Digital Pincushion is (was?) blog of the minute on the Wordpress.com frontpage! I need to get picture for myself as well.  The ?? picture just doesn’t do it for me.   Just nice to see even if my stats stink :P
