Why I love Ask Metafilter
Ask Metafilter is one of those sites that I’ve really come to love. If you’ve never heard of it, it is really a simple idea. Ask a questions and somebody on the web should know the answer and tell you. There is really no limits on the questions or answers (keeping it civil and somewhat decent aside), but the questions and answers can be fascinating.
From the technical:
- In Anscombe’s translation of Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations, why does he use “shew” instead of “show”?
- Is there a video editing tool that can overlay a graphic onto a single frame of an MPEG-2 video?
- What’s the next polynomial in this series: x4+2×2+16, x8+40×6+1128×4+2560×2+65536, ?
To the practical:
- Help this young grasshopper become a tree pruning ninja.
- Shortly after marrying Mrs Mutant I learned I needed a new kitchen. After precisely NO debate on this topic we’re starting the kitchen work Sunday. I have some questions.
- My girlfriend and I (both college students) want to go on an extravagant vacation this January for $600 each. How should we do it?
To the serious:
- I was a part time student with a part time job. After a nervous breakdown, a brief stint in a mental hospital, and a cover-up to keep everything secret…I am in deep trouble with my job. Please help me unravel the mess.
- So my girlfriend went to the “girl doctor” and was told that she might have chlamydia..ok shocking but no big deal. The doctor also noticed a bump on her rear end..and stated that it was a type of viral infection. Now the doctor tells her that its very uncommon to have a bacterial and viral infection at the same time. That it could be a sign of HIV….. Any truth to this? We are both freaking out now and the test results don’t come back until wednesday.. She said she was tested before me and was clean.. I personally was never tested, but my ex-girlfriend was (the only other one I’ve been with) and she was clean of HIV and everything as well..
