Wordpress RPC Pings - More Questions Then Answers
Earlier I posted about some of the traffic fall off I’ve experienced recently. While I know “content is king” and am actively working on it, I have also been looking into some of the more technological ways to get the word out about the blog. One of the things I’ve found is the ability in Wordpress to customize what blog directories are “pinged” when you write a new post.
The only line in there by default is rpc.pingomatic.com which is a service that contacts multiple blog listing sites. When I went the actual site though, there was only 16 directories listed (plus another 5 specialized that i haven’t listed):
- Weblogs.com
- Blo.gs
- Technorati
- Feed Burner
- Syndic8
- NewsGator
- My Yahoo!
- PubSub.com
- Blogdigger
- BlogRolling
- BlogStreet
- Moreover
- Weblogalot
- Icerocket
- News Is Free
- Topic Exchange
One of the first things I noticed though on the pingomatic site (other then the few directories listed) is the stats page didn’t seem to work and the blog hasn’t been updated in over a year and a half. The Wordpress Codex has a large list of server to ping if you want to set it manually but that page is marked as in need of updating.
I really have no desire to ping spam any services, so I am currently keeping rpc.pingomatic.com as the only site until I can tell if some of these static lists are not being duplicated. Hopefully I can learn a little more about this.
UPDATE: Well after looking at just some of the servers on the list on the Wordpress site and others, it looks like at least a few of them are down. Pingoat.com (the other service mentioned with Pingomatic) seems to not have been updated since late 2006 as well. I guess that leaves me in the same boat I’ve been in.
