Happy Supercollider Day!
Happy Supercollider Day! Today the CERN Large Hadron Collider was turned on. Basiclly, the physicists just ran a string of particles around the 27km track at near the speed of light. It won’t be until later in the year that they start ramming particles into each other and the real science begins.
I thought I would share some of my favorite LHC links to commemorate the occassion.
The Accidental Particle - The LHC was built to look for the Higgs boson. This article is the story of the Higgs and way they might not find it.
LHC: Go For Injection - Phil at Bad Astronomy (one of my favorite sites btw) has details about what happens when the LHC goes live.
Live Blogging the LHC Startup - Lots of good info and details here.
No, the LHC won’t destroy the Earth - Phil at BA runs down what doomsday scenarios have been predicted and why they won’t happen.
And of course, the amazing pictures from Boston.com
Enjoy and watch out for those strangelets!
