Awesome Pictures of The Large Hadron Collider

Written by sean on August 4, 2008 – 8:44 pm -

Boston.com has a great set of pictures of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.  I think the aerial shot is my favorite.

Thanks Phil at BadAstronomyBlog for the link (and congratulations as the new president of the JREF!)

The Australian Antarctic Divisision has a great and somewhat otherworldly gallery of photos of icebergs and other ice formations. Just one more of the places I would love to go…

OSU Spring Commencement

Written by sean on June 16, 2008 – 5:02 pm -

Last weekend was spring commencement at Ohio State.  Jess was graduation with her MEd (Masters of Education).  I’ve never been to a spring commencement having graduated Summer of 00.  It was held in the Horseshoe and was in the nineties and sunny (ie really hot).  Jess’s dad Bob and I dropped her off a little early and got pretty good seats.

I took my Canon S2 and the 12X zoom made all the difference.  Here is a link to the photos on Flickr.

Earth And Moon As Seen From Mars

Written by sean on June 9, 2008 – 4:47 pm -

I’ve always loved astronomy.  I never had the discipline for descent practice of it and my math skills are kind of shaky, but as something casual, i find it a lot of fun.   BoingBoing has a link today about an awesome picture taken from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter looking back at the moon and the earth.

Link to the NASA page with details and a larger image.

Some Shots Of The Backyard

Written by sean on June 5, 2008 – 4:30 am -

One of my favorite things about owning a house is just sitting in the backyard with my camera taking pictures of the birds and animals that are running around. Being that we’re around 2 miles from downtown, it is not exactly the Alaskan Wilderness. But we still get some neat birds and it is a nice way to pass some time.

Here’s the link to the gallery.

Merida, Mexico

Written by sean on April 28, 2008 – 11:30 am -

Merida

Mark Bittman has a post on his blog and a column in the New York Times about visiting Merida, on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Jess and I visited Merida in the fall of 2006 and it was one of the best trips of my life. Merida is an old colonial city in Mayan Mexico and the capital of the State of Yucatan. The streets are narrow and paved with brick. The architecture is exactly what I though of for a colonial Mexican city. The people are friendly and life revolves around the main square (or zocalo).

Although not a huge tourist destination, there are a ton of things to do there. A couple of my favourites:

Websites I Like : 101 Cookbooks

Written by sean on April 25, 2008 – 11:30 am -

There are a million food blogs on the Internet, but one of the few I subscribe to is Heidi Swanson’s 101 Cookbooks.  Most of the recipes are vegetarian, but all look really good.  Most are not overly complex and rely on ingredients that most people should be able to find with not to much problem.

For me though, the real kicker is the photography.  There are beautiful  shots that accompany  every recipe.  And food photography is HARD.  Generally when I try to take a picture of something I made that looks especially good, the resulting photograph makes it look grey, shiny, disgusting … thing.

Take a look and give some of the recipes a try.  101 Cookbooks

Spring Flower Macro Shots

Written by sean on April 14, 2008 – 11:30 am -

Purple Flower

It’s getting really nice and the flowers are coming up. This is the first spring in this house so we have no idea what’s been planted in the yard. Some of the flowers are coming up and I’ve been snapping away with the macro function on my Canon SD900.

Updated the Gallery Page

Written by sean on April 9, 2008 – 11:30 am -

I was trolling through my site over the weekend and noticed that my photo gallery page had exactly zero links on it. So I’ve gone ahead and fixed that, so there are actually links to my photos out on the web. Here is the link to the actual page.

I’ve also started to use plogger for hosting my own galleries. I have a flickr Pro account, but I like having a little more control over how the galleries are displayed then I can get with flickr. Plogger is a nice light weight photo gallery that looks clean and has most of the features I want. I have had to disable comments in it though since I was getting some spam.

Here’s the link to my Plogger install.

Adobe Photoshop Express and Ubuntu

Written by sean on March 28, 2008 – 2:40 am -

I went to try out Adobe’s newest offering, which is called Photoshop Express. Basically, it looks like a stripped down editor for the web. One big hit I ran into right off the bat is that it will only recognize .jpg files. When I import from my Canon cameras, it saves things as .JPG files. Unlike windows, Linux is case sensative, so when I was looking for files to upload, it didn’t find any valid files.

I’m sure Adobe will fix this, or you could just rename your files (mv *.JPG *.jpg) which I might do if I have some time this weekend. Dont’ you just love Betas?
