Updated the Gallery Page

April 9th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Sean Lavelle, Web

I was trolling through my site over the weekend and noticed that my photo gallery page had exactly zero links on it. So I’ve gone ahead and fixed that, so there are actually links to my photos out on the web. Here is the link to the actual page.

I’ve also started to use plogger for hosting my own galleries. I have a flickr Pro account, but I like having a little more control over how the galleries are displayed then I can get with flickr. Plogger is a nice light weight photo gallery that looks clean and has most of the features I want. I have had to disable comments in it though since I was getting some spam.

Here’s the link to my Plogger install.

Adobe Photoshop Express and Ubuntu

March 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Tip, Web

I went to try out Adobe’s newest offering, which is called Photoshop Express. Basically, it looks like a stripped down editor for the web. One big hit I ran into right off the bat is that it will only recognize .jpg files. When I import from my Canon cameras, it saves things as .JPG files. Unlike windows, Linux is case sensative, so when I was looking for files to upload, it didn’t find any valid files.

I’m sure Adobe will fix this, or you could just rename your files (mv *.JPG *.jpg) which I might do if I have some time this weekend. Dont’ you just love Betas?

Flock - First Impressions

March 25th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Blogging, Photography, Tech, Tip, Web

Flock is billed as the Social Web Browser. Being somewhat anti-social, it didn’t seem to be anything that I really would use. I mean, I blog, have a flickr page and use LinkedIn, but I really didn’t use any of the “Social Networking” sites. This weekend though, I wanted to upload a bunch of pictures to Flickr and saw that Flock had built in Flickr support. So I though I would give it a try. After playing around with it for a couple hours, I thought I would give my impressions.

Hocking Hills Photos

March 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Sean Lavelle, Travel

Last weekend, Jess and I went down to Southern Ohio in the Hocking Hills region. Unlike most of Ohio, the glaciers from the last ice age didn’t cover the area so it is hilly and cut through by steep gorges. After a good rain it has waterfalls all over the place as well.

Pictures from the Blizzard

March 10th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Random, Sean Lavelle

Although I didn’t get them up the day off the blizzard, I’ve got the pictures up now.  According to the news, we got 20+ inches of snow.  Broke all the records here in central Ohio.  Yesterday we were still under a level 2 snow emergency even though it wasn’t even snowing.  Alot of schools are still closed today.  It has also convinced me to get a snow blower for next year, because although shoveling out the alley makes for a good getting to know your neighbors experience, I don’t want to have to do it again.

Here are the pictures.

Pictures From The Caribbean (Underwater)

March 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Sean Lavelle, Travel, Uncategorized, Web

I’m still slowly getting my pictures put together from my last trip to Puerto Rico. This week I have put up underwater pictures I took during that trip. All were taken off the beach behind Mimi’s Guesthouse in Guarnica, PR.

This is the first time I used my underwater housing for the Canon Powershot SD900. It worked great, but the viewscreen was almost impossible to see if the sun was reflecting off of it since the housing isn’t anti-glare like the actual camera view screen.

Guanica, Puerto Rico Pictures

February 19th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Sean Lavelle, Travel

Continuing on with photographs from my (not so) recent trip to Puerto Rico.  These are photographs of Guanica, a small town on the southern Caribbean coast.  It’s a beautiful area that is much different then the rest of the country, being home to a tropical dry forest (with cactuses and all). All the pictures were taken either from the guest house or the hidden beach behind it.

If you are heading to that part of Puerto Rico, check out Mimi’s Guesthouse.  The location is nice and secluded, it is a short walk to an almost always private beach and the owners are friendly and knowledgeable about the area.

Here are the pictures.

San Juan, Puerto Rico Pictures

February 12th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Photography, Sean Lavelle, Travel

Here is the first part of our trip to Puerto Rico in Sept of 2007. We spent several days in San Juan which is a beautiful city with lots of stuff to see and do. My one caveat would be if you are staying in Old San Juan, don’t rent a car until you need to. The driving is hilly, the streets are narrow and confusing (for someone who doesn’t know them). Walk or take a cab until you are leaving the old city.

Photographer Jack Radcliffe has post a really beautiful set of photographs of his daughter Alison.  He took photos over the course of her growing up and the outcome is really striking.
